Overview
Qadorien is a rugged island realm of black cliffs, narrow harbors, and wind-scoured hills rising from the western seas. Its coastline is defined by towering stone escarpments where waves break endlessly against dark rock, carving sea caves and deep natural harbors.
Though often mistaken for a harsh frontier by Katarisian observers, Qadorien is a stable and disciplined kingdom shaped by decades of maritime tradition and careful governance.
The island was originally established as an Edranic naval outpost, intended to control key sea routes between the Midsea and the western ocean. Over time, however, the settlement grew into an independent society whose identity diverged from the empire that founded it.
Today Qadorien is known throughout Kataris as a neutral maritime power, a kingdom that rarely wages war but whose authority over sea law and navigation is widely respected.
Government
Qadorien is ruled by a monarch who sits upon the Ebony Throne, the symbolic seat of authority over the island and its surrounding waters.
While Qadorien is ruled by a monarch, the position is not hereditary. When a ruler dies or abdiactes, the powerful Houses gather in council to nominate candidates from among themselves or anywhere else. Birth may grant influence, but no lineage guarantees succession.
The new ruler is chosen by vote and, if accepted, has to complete the Trial of the Tide to gain legitimacy.
While the monarch oversees diplomacy, defense, and maritime law, the great Houses of Qadorien administer the kingdom’s major ports and shipping networks.
This balance of power has created a stable political structure in which the crown coordinates the realm while the maritime houses sustain its strength.
Society
Life in Qadorien is shaped by resilience and discipline.
The island’s rocky terrain supports only limited agriculture, forcing many communities to rely on fishing and coastal trade. Settlements cluster around sheltered bays or narrow valleys where terraced farms carve small pockets of fertile land into the hillsides.
Oaths and contracts play a central role in Qadorian culture. Promises made before witnesses are considered sacred obligations.
Economy
Qadorien’s economy revolves around maritime trade, fishing, and coastal industry.
Merchant vessels regularly pass through the island’s harbors while traveling between the Midsea and the Velrician Sea. The kingdom’s ports offer safe harbor, ship repairs, and arbitration for disputes between rival merchant houses.
The island’s beacon network, maintained by lighthouse wardens and storm-watchers, is vital for navigating the dangerous surrounding waters.
Agriculture is limited but supported through terraced farming in sheltered valleys. Grain, vegetables, and hardy fruit crops sustain the island’s population alongside imported goods from mainland Kataris.
Qadorien’s greatest economic strength, however, lies in its reputation for neutrality and law, making it a trusted mediator for disputes between foreign powers.
Culture
Qadorian culture emphasizes endurance, honor, and restraint.
Stone fortresses and lighthouse towers rise along the island’s cliffs, their beacon fires visible for miles across the sea. These structures symbolize the kingdom’s role as both guardian and witness to the ocean’s dangers.
Religion
Religion in Qadorien centers on reverence for the sea and the winds that shape the island’s destiny.
Many Qadorians believe that the ocean acts as a witness to human actions. Oaths sworn before the sea are believed to carry spiritual weight, and breaking such promises is considered a grave offense.
Rituals often involve offerings cast into the water or released into the wind from high cliffs and watchtowers. Though temples to foreign gods exist in port settlements, many Qadorians follow older traditions.
Geography
Qadorien’s coastline is dominated by towering cliffs of dark stone carved by centuries of violent weather.
The island’s western coast faces the Velric Shoals and endures powerful storms throughout the year, while the eastern side faces toward the midsea and the sea of Vasharr.
The southern coast faces the open sea, as well as Zharatel and the Emberchain, which are infamous for piracy.
Part of Qadorien but rarely mentioned outside of it are the Velric Shoals, a group of Islands of varying sizes stretching from Qadorien toward the Drowned Coast. Thornwake, Serrin, Vel Kareth, Maravelle, Paletide, Hallowmere Key, Black Lintel and the Isle of Ceryn are all part of Qadorien's territory or sphere of influence.
Highwind
Highwind is a small but strategically important mountain settlement in Qadorien, perched along the wind-carved mountains inland. Though modest in size, Highwind is widely know as the birthplace of the Highwind Couriers, a renowned guild of aerial messengers who ride massive trained birds across the known world. From their mountain aerie known as the Crest, the couriers maintain a vast relay network stretching across kingdoms and seas, carrying messages, contracts and urgent dispatches faster than any ship or rider could manage.
