Overview

Thessarn is a mountainous principality known for its strong religious traditions and conservative political culture.

Historically, Thessarn and Rhemark formed a single administrative region under the authority of the Edranic Empire. When imperial authority weakened and eventually collapsed, the region fractured along cultural and political lines. The northern river cities developed into the commercial republic of Rhemark, while the southern highlands consolidated into the more traditional and devout realm of Thessarn.

The rulers of Thessarn retained the title of Prince, a legacy of their former role as Imperial Princes within the Edranic imperial hierarchy.

Government

Thessarn is governed as a theocratic monarchy, in which political authority and religious legitimacy are inseparable.

The ruler of Thessarn, styled the Anointed of the Gods, is formally chosen through a ritual process overseen by the high clergy. This selection is said to reflect divine will, interpreted through omens and sacred rites.

In practice, this process is neither neutral nor uncontested. Competing factions within the Church exert influence over interpretation, and rival claimants have historically been supported by differing readings of divine signs.

While the monarch holds formal authority, no decree is considered legitimate without clerical sanction. The Church does not rule directly, but it determines what is considered lawful, sacred, or heretical.

Society

Thessarian society is strongly rooted in tradition, faith, and regional identity. Rural villages and small fortified towns dominate the landscape, and many families maintain ties to the same valleys and settlements for generations.

Noble houses exercise considerable authority over their territories, acting as both political rulers and local protectors. Loyalty to family, faith, and homeland is highly valued, and social structures tend to change slowly.

Compared to neighbouring Rhemark, Thessarn remains far less urbanized. Agricultural communities, mountain settlements, and monastery estates form the backbone of the population.

Community festivals, seasonal markets, and religious celebrations play an important role in maintaining social cohesion.

Economy

Thessarn’s economy is based primarily on agriculture, pastoralism, and control of important mountain trade routes.
Valley farms produce grain and fruit, while higher elevations support livestock such as sheep and cattle. Thessarian beers and cured meats are well regarded throughout neighboring regions.
Though it lacks the vast maritime trade networks of Rhemark, Thessarn benefits from its position along overland caravan routes that pass through the mountains. Merchants traveling between northern ports and southern markets frequently cross Thessarian territory, generating income through tolls, markets, and local trade.
Mining and metallurgy are also present in several mountainous regions.

Culture

Thessarian culture emphasizes continuity, religious devotion, and respect for ancestral traditions. Many communities maintain customs and local identities that have existed for centuries.
Architecture reflects the rugged terrain of the region. Stone villages, fortified hill towns, and monasteries perched along mountain ridges are common throughout the principality.
Music, folklore, and storytelling remain central to Thessarian culture. Many legends revolve around the mountains, ancient battles, and miracles associated with the Lunar faith.
While Rhemark celebrates commercial progress and innovation, Thessarn takes pride in stability, tradition, and the preservation of its historic way of life.

Religion

Religion plays a central role in Thessarian society. The Imperial Lunar Religion is deeply integrated into both public life and political authority.
Monasteries, pilgrimage sites, and cathedral cities are common across the principality, and clergy often serve as advisors to the princely court. Religious festivals and observances shape the rhythm of life in both towns and rural communities.
Although older folk traditions persist in some isolated valleys, they are usually absorbed into the practices of the Lunar faith rather than maintained as separate belief systems.

Geography

Thessarn is defined by its mountainous terrain. High ridges, deep valleys, and forested slopes dominate the landscape, creating a region that is both defensible and geographically fragmented.
Settlements cluster in fertile valleys or along important mountain routes. Fortified towns and castles guard many of the major passes through the mountains.
These passes form crucial overland trade corridors connecting northern and southern regions of the continent.

Neighbours

Thessarn's neighbours include Rhemark in the north, the Eastern Holds to the southeast, Drosenne in the south and Edran in the west.
