Overview
Rhemark is a prosperous mercantile republic built upon trade, industry, and maritime ambition. From its capital in Alvermund, the republic controls extensive commercial networks that connect inland markets with distant ports and maritime trade routes.
Historically, Rhemark and Thessarn were once part of a single political region shaped by imperial administration. When imperial authority weakened, the region fractured along cultural and political lines.
Rhemark’s rise to prominence is closely tied to its maritime trade. Access to the Arryscross Channel, which connects the Ironwake Strait to the Midsea, allows Rhemarker ships to avoid the long and dangerous voyage around the Thrysk seas. This route shortens the journey from Alvermund by nearly a thousand kilometers and bypasses waters frequently raided by the Thrysk.
As a result, Rhemark’s commercial prosperity remains closely linked to the stability and accessibility of the Arryscross passage.
Government
Rhemark is governed as a mercantile republic, where political power rests with wealthy merchant families, shipowners, and guild coalitions rather than hereditary nobility.
The central political institution is the Assembly of Houses, a governing council composed of representatives from the most powerful merchant dynasties, guild organizations, and major commercial interests within the republic.
Participation in government is strictly limited. Only individuals who meet certain qualifications (typically wealth, guild leadership, or ownership of major trading enterprises) may sit in the Assembly or participate in the selection of its leadership. In practice, this means political power remains concentrated among a relatively small number of influential families and economic elites.
Society
Rhemarkan society is highly urbanized and commercially oriented. Large port cities dominate political and economic life, while rural regions primarily serve to support the republic’s markets and industries.
Merchants, financiers, shipowners, and skilled craftsmen form the backbone of the republic’s middle and upper classes. Guild membership and commercial reputation often matter far more than noble ancestry.
The rapid growth of industry and urban trade has also produced a large working population in major cities. Laborers, dockworkers and artisans form a significant portion of the population, creating growing social tensions between wealthy merchant elites and the urban workforce.
Economy
Trade is the lifeblood of the republic. Rhemark maintains one of the largest merchant fleets on the continent, and its ports serve as critical hubs connecting inland trade networks with overseas markets.
A significant portion of Rhemarker maritime commerce relies on access to the Arryscross Channel, a narrow passage linking the Ironwake Strait with the Midsea. This route dramatically shortens voyages for Rhemarkan ships traveling from Alvermund and other northern ports, allowing them to avoid a far longer journey around hostile waters known for Thrysk raiders.
Because of this, control and stability of the Arryscross route remains a matter of major strategic importance for Rhemark’s merchant houses and naval authorities.
Shipbuilding, metallurgy and textile production play a major role in the republic’s economy. Powerful banking houses headquartered in Alvermund finance ventures across the continent, allowing Rhemark to exert economic influence far beyond its borders.
Culture
Rhemarker culture values ambition, pragmatism, and ingenuity. Individuals who rise through commercial success, technical innovation, or maritime exploration are widely admired.
Architecture reflects the republic’s priorities: shipyards, warehouses, merchant halls, and industrial workshops dominate the urban landscape. While noble estates exist, the symbols of power in Rhemark are more often counting houses, trading halls, and docks filled with merchant vessels.
Rhemark also maintains a strong maritime identity. Sailors, explorers, and naval officers occupy an important place in the republic’s culture and folklore.
Religion
The Imperial Lunar Religion remains the most widely practiced organized faith in Rhemark, particularly within cities where temples often function as community centers.
However, the republic maintains a relatively tolerant approach toward religious practice. As long as religious institutions do not disrupt commerce or civic order, the government rarely interferes in matters of faith.
In practice, religion tends to play a less dominant role in public life than in many neighboring realms. Many Rhemarkans view faith as a personal matter rather than a central political institution. As such, old Rhemarkan Faith is still being practiced in parts of the republic.
Geography
Rhemark occupies a strategically valuable region of navigable rivers, coastal ports, and fertile lowlands that support both agriculture and urban development.
Its cities are concentrated along major waterways and coastlines, where docks, warehouses, and shipyards dominate the landscape. Inland regions consist of farmland, small towns, and industrial centers connected by roads, canals, and river trade routes.
The republic’s maritime importance is closely tied to the Arryscross Channel, a narrow sea passage connecting the Ironwake Strait to the Midsea. This route serves as one of the most important trade corridors for northern shipping, dramatically shortening the journey between Rhemark’s ports and southern markets.
Rhemarkan control extends to two islands in the north, Skarrholm and Haderwik.
Neighbours
Rhemark only has two neighbours, Edran in the northeast and Thessarn in the south.
